Some days I put together a fancy lunch for meself, but other days it’s something nice from the sea and a short stack of crackers. Prolly have a bunch of jumbo blueberries for dessert, in case you were worried about antioxidants.

Jose Gourmet rarely disappoints, and this smoked trout is always good. Quite subtle smoke flavor, compared, say, to the trout from Cole’s, but the flesh of the trout itself ends up a bit more smoked looking and toughened up. Not sure how they pull off that trick. I like both companies’ trout, plus the one from Fangst, as well.

For what it’s worth to all you who work in offices and shops with persnickety colleagues, none of these trout cans ever seem to draw complaints—a sharp contrast to most any day I crack open sardines or sprats or (especially) herring.

  1. One of these days I’m going to have to try canned trout. That’s a difficult thing for me to try to process because my favorite way to eat trout is an hour or less after they get out of the water and get cooked in a cast iron skillet, preferably over a campfire. But I do love trout!
