Our first meal in Tokyo was at Torisho Ishii Hina, an offshoot of the one-star Torisho in Osaka. Our reservation was for the first round at 5.15 pm, and we were the only foreigners among the 12 diners.

Having just flown in from the US, we were quite tired and were afraid the meal wouldn’t be as enjoyable. However, Torisho Ishii Hina far exceeded my expectation. We quite enjoyed watching the chef cooking everything in front of us. The dishes served to us include:

    Taro and fried ginko nut

    Breast

    Neck

    Makamo – Japanese wild vegetable

    Esophagus

    Chicken stock chawanmushi

    Chicken wing

    Gizzard

    Smoked chicken with blue cheese

    Harami

    Chicken thigh with Negi

    Cabbage roll and winter vegetables

    Liver

    Chochin (chicken ovary)- add-on

    Tsukune (Meatball)

A choice of main – Oyakodon

    Apple sherbet and honey

Some of my favorites were the chicken thigh, wing, and gizzard. Some of the dishes sound extreme, but everything was well-cooked and delicious. As expected in Japan, the service was impeccable. Everyone was warm and was kind to translate the dishes to English for us. At the end, the whole team came out to send us off.

What a great start to our trip. I recommended Torisho Ishii Hina for anyone who is looking for a meal that is not the usual sushi, kaiseki etc. We have a few restaurants booked for this trip and will be sharing our meal with everyone!
