The last couple times I tried to order this, the deli was out of bread. This time they were just out of the sourdough rolls, which probably would have improved this, but I went with the French roll.
Otherwise the meat was piled on, the pepperoncinis nice and tangy, and the vinaigrette was just right. The fresh moz wasn’t too watery and the artichokes felt a little unnecessary but weren’t bad.

I haven’t lived in California for some years but Vons (Safeway in So Ca) always made top tier sandwiches.
Boars head has the best pickles.
I miss the Safeway sandwiches, I lived in Phoenix for 12 years and live in Florida now.
They used to do a chicken artichoke panini that had a serious chokehold on me.
Never seen a Safeway sandwich like that. The giant American subs are on that horrible bloated dough with cheap ingredients; the roast beef ones are okay, but the Italian subs are Subway grade mediocre.
Mangia!!!
Safeway has, hands down, the best sub bread/rolls outside of the northeast. Their store brand no label French bread.
I grew up in the Philly area and worked at an Italian deli in high school and on college breaks, making hoagies and the like.
Life took me to the West Coas, where I have spent 30 years trying to get a decent sandwich. This has gone to the extent I have basically given up an just make my own. I even bought a commercial grade meat slicer. My kids have never been to Philly but they have grown up eating quality cheesesteaks, hoagies, and meatball subs.
I don’t regularly shop at Safeway, but I make a special trip whenever I make sandwiches. I went there last night to get stuff for chicken parm subs. Got the last two loaves.
Yeah same here… on a whim i got the spicy Italian sandwich from Safeway and for 10 bucks with chips and a drink it largely surpasses all fast food competitors
I used to live on these back in the early 2000’s, and only cost $4.99 for all that meat. Not sure if the bread is different now but back then it had an extremely firm crust.
Since when does Safewae use Boar’s Head?? Mine are all Dietz Watson and I avoid em at all cost.
That looks amazing.
