Before you say it… yes, this is young. It isn’t too often that someone tells you they’re opening Lafite and you can have a glass… when this happens, the only correct answers are “yes, please” and “thank you.” So I did that.
This vintage is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot. Once blended, the juice spent 15 months in mostly new French oak barrels. It comes in at a fairly restrained 13% ABV.
**Tasting notes:** deep ruby-to-purple color; enormous nose of blackberry, black cherry, tobacco leaf, and cigar box; on the full-bodied palate, tannins are noticeable but smoother than expected, and balanced nicely by juicy acidity and restrained alcohol content; elegant and seemingly eternal fruity finish; this clearly has the structure to age gracefully for 2-3 decades or more, yet it’s already outstanding and approachable; it’s difficult to assess value for a $800-1000 USD bottle, but simply put, this is one of the best red wines I’ve ever tasted; 4.9 out of 5
