  1. This quant cozy taqueria sets the stage early with it’s picturesque location nestled between a pawn shop and hazardous waste consulting group, lets you know visually right away you in for a treat. Even the smell of garbage containers and open sewage lines was minimal, adding just a slight rancid jenes se qua as opposed to the sometimes overpowering sensory assault found at similar establishments.

Reservations at this 4 stool establishment can be hard to come by, so we decided to try our luck during off hours. We were in luck, greeted with a friendly “what do you want?” by the head chef himself! We quickly perused the menu taped to the only slightly stained wall, and decided to try every dish on the menu, what fun!

Each dish was a different cut of meat grilled on a flattop the same exact way, allowing the guest to try and figure out the subtle differences by appearance and texture alone. None of the stools were available so we were guided to the sidewalk experience, were we got to enjoy our meal outdoors standing against the tide of pedestrians playfully shoving us occasionally.

Several disheveled children even offered us sweets and candy for a small fee, what service!

Dishes were served on a playful colorful Frisbee, at least if you are lucky enough to come early! Guests seated after us got the more standard tinfoil crudely shaped into a plate, I noticed a few had structural integrity issues, but tacos falling onto the ground due to the lack of Frisbee plates is a small nitpick at best.

The food its self was exceptionally edible! We managed to eat all dishes and were not even really able to tell them apart, but they tasted like grilled meat on a tortilla. I really appreciated how most traditional Mexican Taquería options were ignored like having a wide variety of flavorful salsa, or the arability of tacos al pastor, who needs any of that mess?

Joking aside despite having a full Micheline star Taquería El Califa de León is not exactly the best Taquería in MXC. Was legit fun to visit and certainly worth a stop since it’s not a huge commitment, but the fact they have a *star* is mostly a gimmick.
