This simple-seeming square is more challenging to get right than it might sound, but it’s so worth it! This year I managed to nail it, I feel: perfectly baked shortbread base, baked just long enough to have a bit of a snap, caramel that neither split nor crystallized nor scorched, and chocolate that tempered perfectly. Yay!
