Columbia, S.C. (WACH) — In honor of the spirit of giving, The Basilica of Saint Peter celebrated 39 years of uplifting those in need on Christmas day.
Everybody has a story, and it’s great to just be quiet and listen, and hear where their hearts are, and why they’re here, how they got here
said 3 year volunteer, Jill Urbany.
Strangers connecting, sharing stories of Christmas’ past and present.
Some are familiar faces, while others meet for the first time.
For nearly four decades, the Saint Vincent de Paul society has hosted this annual Christmas dinner at Saint Peter’s Basilica, offering a warm meal and a sense of family to hundreds.
We just help out the people in need, in the community. Someone who might be by themselves on a holiday or have nowhere to go, just looking for a meal
said the Coordinator for St. Vincent de Paul, Hal Lominick.
It makes people that don’t have families that are living, for them to be able to sit together ad eat together as a family and as one, because we are in God’s eyes, one
said an attendee, Crystal Ammonds.
For guests like James Shannon, this dinner means more than just a meal. This year is his first Christmas without his family, making this community gathering even more meaningful
I’m here because my mom, all her immediate family passed away. I’m out here on the street, and I’m homeless you know, I’ve been like that ever since. I’m trying to make the best of it, I’m trying to make it a good Christmas, since it is my first holiday without my parents. You guys make it worthwhile. We’re getting up and just trying to make it through another day
said James.
“This is what it’s all about. Truly the meaning of Christmas, to come, and to give up my time to another person, to help make their day better, said volunteer, Jill Urbany.
The dinner isn’t the only way the church spreads cheer, through the “Adopt-a-bag” program, guests are gifted a bag with certain necessities, including hats, gloves, socks, toiletries, a sweatshirt, and umbrellas.
Saint Vincent de Paul’s efforts continue year round, with meals served on the fourth Saturday of every month.
