Christmas Day was about more than a rivalry matchup for the Boston Celtics. Yes, they were scheduled to face the Philadelphia 76ers in what ultimately developed into a disappointing loss, but they were also gearing up to face a former draft pick in Guerschon Yabusele. The veteran forward spent two seasons with the Celtics after being selected with the No. 16 pick in the 2016 NBA draft. During his time with the franchise, he averaged 2.3 points and 1.4 rebounds on 44.2% shooting.
However, after a strong showing at the Paris Olympics, Yabusele has finally got a second chance at the NBA. He signed with the Sixers during the summer and has become one of their most consistent role players. During the Dec. 25 matchup against Boston, he dropped 12 points and grabbed four rebounds while coming off the bench.
“Definitely special,” Yabusele said of his return to Boston. “It started just yesterday (Christmas Eve) when we got to the city. Being able just to be in here, have the feeling, familiar, you know? So it was just fun. It was a really special moment to be able to be in here and play.”
After leaving Boston in 2017, Yabusele rebuilt his career in Europe. Some highly successful years with Real Madrid helped him improve his game, develop his body and gain the experience he needed to be a far more impactful and versatile player. He returned to the NBA as a vastly improved talent compared to the one who struggled for game time under Brad Stevens.
“I was hoping to be back in the NBA because this—I feel like this was the right time, and I feel like I was waiting for this long time,” Yabusele added. “I was just prepared. You know? It was my body and everything was just different. Mentally, I feel like I was ready.”
The Celtics will undoubtedly be rooting for Yabusele and his continued success. He’s earned the opportunity to carve out a legitimate career in the league.
However, the franchise will undoubtedly be hoping that his success doesn’t come at their expense, especially after the Sixers shut down Boston’s perimeter threats throughout their Christmas Day matchup.
