Hey r/wine! First time poster who’s spent the past week or so lurking and gathering recommendations. I’m a newcomer to wine after spending my first year of drinking getting into whiskeys with my dad, but I’ve been a bit intimidated jumping into the wine world. Went by my local shop today and found this on the shelf for $12.99 a bottle so I figured I’d try it out and give it my first proper review.

The wine had some stone fruit and some earthiness on the nose. Not super funky but I definitely noticed it. The palate was more juicy and led with some stewed fruit flavors and more of that earthiness returning. Definitely dryer and more tannic than other reds I’ve had before. I feel like I’m searching deep for some more flavors, but I’m guessing that’s just my palate not being really challenged by a lot of wine yet. Finish was pleasant and didn’t linger around for too long.

Overall really good! The “lack” of deep, complex flavors shouldn’t really be a shock I guess considering the price. Still a great wine though, better than some other budget things I’ve tried at friend’s houses. I was happy to taste some more than just the “red wine” taste I remember from being younger and trying different wines at dinner. I think red wines are definitely in my wheelhouse in terms of flavors.

Any recommendations for a college student making their first foray into wine is definitely appreciated, but not requested specifically. Just happy to share a new interest and join the community.

Yeah, Guigal is a ‘good’ wine. It isn’t ever great, but it’s always good as a weekly sipper…one of my go-to wines if I’m out at a bar 😊

Edit to say: Specifically the CdR.
