Home for the holidays and my mom insisted I make her bread. Had to MacGyver this withunused chopsticks and a bread tie.

New to fancy bread (just make basic stuff). What does this do that a standard sharp knife won’t do?

Or just hold it in your hand. But whatever works
Unexpected_bukkake
You couldn’t just hold the blade in your fingers?

And here I am wasting my money buying ones online! 🤣

You can just thread the chopstick through the holes in the razor which gives it a nice gentle curve which helps scoring. I was a career bread baker for 11 years and used chopsticks as a lame almost exclusively.

see those holes in the razor blade? you could have pinched the blade and threaded a single chop stick through those and it would have been the same style as this [type of lame](https://breadtopia.com/store/bread-lame/?gQT=1), and if the chop stick is too thick just split it (carefully) in half with another knife (or sand, whittle, whatever MacGyver would do). That’s what I’ve used for most of my bread making life until I was gifted a more pretty lame.
unless you vastly prefer a straight blade lame over a curved, then yeah this works

I use one chopstick inserted through the razor blade, much like a lame. Works exactly the same and the razor blade stays put.

I just use a box cutter

I just use a regular razor blade, like a utility style one. Is there a benefit to having it on a stick like this?

Maybe I’m just being dense, but why did you have to make this? Couldn’t you have just used the blade?

Genius! It’s better than buying a $30 lame. Whenever I score my bread I just hold the razor in my hand.
AllisonIsReal
That’s lame😋

Last time I scored a loaf, I tried kitchen scissors. Worked fine.

So funny! I watched grocery store bakers at my store just use their hands to hold the razor a million times. I never knew there was a special tool for it until somewhat recently tbh!

Tough crowd in the comments on this one. Yes, you could just use your hands, but how often do you get to tap into your inner MacGyver? You’ve got to take those chances when you can get them!

And to think I have all three of those items within 2 feet of each other and never thought about doing that!! Well done.
whythhhhhhhh
Honestly, a sharp pair of scissors works just fine

It ain’t stupid if it works

Looks like you are preparing for a prison fight.

My daughter bought me a lame as a birthday present so you know for dang sure I use that bad boy and the banneton she also got me.

LOL, points for ingenuity. I usually just use it as an opportunity to REALLY sharpen one of my chef knives.

I always use a bare razor blade. It give me greater control and because of the possibility of cutting myself better results.

Carpet knife blades work really well and are stiffer than a standard razor, so it’s easier to use them without a handle or anything
LadyShittington
I, too, have a lame that I’ve never used.
Chiligrl77
That’s right. Lady MacGyver that shiz!

I swear some bread people do the most for no reason other than to post on this sub.
