Alyssa said she just returned from her busy Christmas food shop at Dunnes Stores.

She said: “We are just back from doing our big Christmas food shop, €225 but we only paid €14 for it.

“€14, I actually couldn’t believe it, I was so shocked.”

However, she did reveal her secret on how she was able to only spend €14 on a mega food shop for Christmas.

Alyssa added: “So in March, we decided to take the money that we were getting from the deposit return scheme, and instead of spending the few euros that you were getting, we put it on a Dunnes gift card.

She stated that they let it build up throughout the years with the savings from the deposit return scheme only dedicated to the Christmas shop.

And the savings from the bottle being returned reached up to a whopping €211.

She continued: “We had €211 on it today, I actually couldn’t believe it so our shop only came to €14.”

Alyssa urged her followers to do the same thing she did for Christmas and start their savings from the deposit return scheme now to ease their financial strain next festivity season.

She added: “This is your sign, if you didn’t do it this year, start in January and put it on a gift card. Let it build up throughout the whole year.

“So that when it comes to your food shop in December, you can hand it in and hopefully you will have enough on it that. So when you’re shopping, you won’t have to pay anything for it.”

She revealed that she’s going to do it after having huge success with her plan to build up a good chunk of savings for their next Christmas food shop, and hopefully, she wouldn’t have to pay anything for it.

Physical gift cards are activated in-store at the time of purchase and are valid for five years – this also applies to e-gift cards when purchased online on the website.

‘SUCH A GREAT IDEA’

Alyssa’s followers were left amazed by her genius idea to make a huge chunk of savings from deposit return schemes for their next Christmas food shop.

THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES

DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 – and it was an instant hit.

Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland’s first ‘shopping frenzy’.

During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne’s ‘Better Value’ bargains.

Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 – starting with apples and oranges.

The retailer said: “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.

“Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.

“Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas.”

The retailer’s first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.

They added: “In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.

“Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England.”

Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people.

Another person added: “That’s what I’ve been doing and I’ve nearly €200 on it! Going to do my food shop with it.”

The third person said: “That’s brilliant, going to start doing that in January.”

The fourth person wrote: “Such a great idea! What a great saving.”
