Hey y’all, just got a BJ3 for Christmas and was wondering if gaps this large are normal in the firebox?

Thanks!

Normally there is a stainless steel ring that goes on top, which brings the slabs together. There should be no gaps then. Are you missing this?

There should be a metal ring. LMK if you have any tips getting it over the ceramics. It was a PITA for me.

Put little wads of paper towels behind each one to shim them together where you can place the metal ring around it. When you have your first fore it will burn them out. I recommend having a fire to get the temps dialed in and burn any manutacturing oils or anything that may be there out before you cook in it.

You can stuff toilet paper behind them to prop them up and get the fire ring on. They’ll burn away first break in fire

Thanks everyone! I do have the ring but just set it on top like an absolute rookie.

Pro tip, seat the tissue near the petal holes. Too much thermal mass to burn them off on a sub 600 degree burn. Fish them out with some wire or a modified wire hangar. They will not burn off during most cooks. The beauty of ceramic insulation. I made skirt steak at 2 pm. Finished, set it for 200 and cranked it (same fire no new coals) for burgers at 9 pm! That’s the tool you now possess! Be courageous!

You’ll get that on these big jobs.

This is the best design fire box yet. The old ones were just one solid piece. Went through two of those. Then the next Gen had a small slit down it and it lasted a few years then cracked to pieces. Now this one is free to move and expand and everybody happy.

It won’t cook anything like that. I’ll buy it from you for $100

The ring is a bitch to get on. I use screwdrivers as shims and the longer drivers hold the plates further in till you can get it started one side and then the screwdriver shimmed side on. Have fun its a great hobby

Enjoy how pretty it all looks. It’ll never look that good again but the food will be fantastic. I accidentally knocked my ring off twice tonight 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️.

Balling up paper works every time. Still a PITA but it’s a time saver.
