Yeah brother. You need a wake up call, hopefully this was it because it just gets worse. I dont believe in abstinence, but you should seperate your habit from your work. (Can confirm)
wolfarchon91
When I started to quit drinking, I would indulge the craving with a Monster. The big cans. It really helped. The extra energy and sugars curbed the need to drink. Then I started drinking more water with that, then replaced monsters entirely with water. Now its just coffees and waters.

When does drinking after work become drinking before work?
I’m aware this doesn’t have much to do with the topic, but I’m still curious.
Trixie1143
If you have to control it, it’s out of control.

For me, drinking at work, or more importantly, *figuring out how to constantly drink at work without being caught* was the sign that I had a problem. When you mentally slide drinks into your prep list, it’s time to reflect.
You can do it fellow kitchen comrade. Reach out to your fellow trench dwellers, you will find support.

I wish you the best of luck friend. It’s tough, substance abuse is rampant in this industry, I’m in my early 20s and was told as a half joke that “drinking is the only way you’ll get through this”, by a guy who’s hands shake if he didn’t drink last night.
Every set back is just another opportunity to finally succeed, no matter how many times you relapse it’s always possible the next time things will stick.

Drinking at any time while employed in hospitality is a dangerous hobby. Doesn’t matter if you are chef, server, bartender, dishy, management, etc.
You’re often too close to the drinks, and you’re in a stressful environment.
They say if you’re dealing, don’t get high on your own supply. I feel that’s relevant here.
Human_Reference_1708
Kitchen worker and person who used to drink before and at work here. Quitting was the hardest thing I have ever had to do and the best decision Ive ever made. There are a surprising amount of quietly sober (and loudly sober) people in kitchens so I wouldn’t be afraid to reach out. Good luck

absolutely it’s time got to separate something that should only really be used wisely, during down time, and in reasonable amounts only- from work. it never mixes, is worrying for you worrying for other employees and worrying for customers and it’d be like that for anyone friend not just you if this isn’t a joke then pls do your best to and sobriety looks fantastic on anyone:)<3 ((in recovery myself))

I was to be the same way. But it was alcohol and cocaine. Now going on 10 years clean and sober and giving up that shit was the best decision of my life

I love you brother! You’ll be alright. Just make sure to listen to your sensible inner voice 🥰
Working with people who incapacitate themselves before and during work is my pet peeve. You’re working around dangerous equipment. Have some sense. You’re also endangering your coworkers.

my arms look the same way for the exact same reason. granted i’ll still burn myself when i’m not drinking (i’m just clumsy) but not as badly and not as frequently. I’m working through the same thing as you rn, good luck man.

Ya think? Do you realize or even care that you’re also a danger to other people when you’re drunk at work?

All of you who are in here advocating for drinking before/during work (or in this case, egging on someone who has expressed interest in stopping) need to seriously take a hard look at yourselves, because no one should be even the slightest bit proud of that horrendous shit. What the fuck is wrong with you?
Don’t ever let me see you absolute wastes of oxygen EVER complain that you’re not being treated as professionals, because you don’t deserve to be.
To the OP: I’m glad that you want to take steps to make your life better. Please don’t listen to any of the horrible people in here, you’re making the right choice. I, and many others, are really behind you, and wish you all the success in the world. We’re cheering for you.

If you’re drinking before or at work you have a huge alcohol problem. You should really consider a change. I saw in another comment you’ve got a little one. You’re gonna want to be there for graduation homie.
But dude, I get it. Working in a kitchen is a hard place to be if you’re trying to avoid substance abuse. I had to get out and find something else for this reason.

I didn’t realize how bad my dependence was on alcohol until I broke my back. I refused all opioids and then tried to cope even harder with alcohol. It isn’t the answer. It’s been two years and I don’t have an answer for even myself. But I can tell you that alcohol almost destroyed everything I had post injury. Do not let it control your life.

Hey have you been to a doctor lately? You hands look swollen. You might want to get a check up and get a blood test.

Being sober working on the line is hard I’ve been sober now for 8 month, and here’s how I did it!!!! 1st get arrested for DUI and possession of Marijuana 2nd do a little time and get released on probation. And boom sober as fuck. Follow these easy steps and you too can be sober and have a better chance of getting hired at ANY restaurant cause you’ve got a record

when you are in the shit and all hell is breaking loose on the line, theres nothing like taking a sip of an ice cold beer hidden in your lowboy. instant peace and focus.
used to drink every single day on the line. would drink beers with sous at 8am before brunch in locker. I drank tallboys in the park every day with my buddy on our break. I Hid bottles in my locker and took turns going down to drink w other cooks. We would mix cocktails and stash them in 1/6 pans on the rail.
I would trade 12 packs of modelos for secret recipes from old mexican cooks. Im friendly and waiters gave me wine whenever I wanted. I would drink the brandy for the peppercorn sauce, and if all else failed id mix cooking wine with sprite.
I always had a stomach ache, this is a shitty lifestyle and im glad i dont drink at work anymore.

Sounds like a great idea. If you keep this up you’re probably going to get a lot more seriously hurt. So it’ll be hard, but there’s still time.
Yea don’t drink before work. Or during work please.
I know a guy who burnt himself so bad that he had to go to the hospital and got seriously hurt
