My Head Chef (supported her as sous for 10 years, plus worked with her for 12 before she landed the role) turned up obliterated the day after our staff party in August and was sent home. She’s been signed off with stress ever since, we all know she’s not coming back, they made me head chef a month later and said I won’t have to step down, even if she returns. They’ve been promising me the role for pretty much a decade (since she took over) and I’m still in disbelief it finally happened.

Thing is, I’ve heard nothing from her. There was obviously no handover, no contact offering advice/help etc, just radio silence. I’m in contact with her friend who tells me everything. A lot has been said, but one thing that stood out was that she hates the job, but she doesn’t want to leave as she doesn’t want me to have it! I don’t want to sound cocky, but I’ve carried her for the last 10 years. Her cooking ability is almost non existent, she has literally zero communication skills, upsets staff by treating everyone differently. She got the roll as a thank you from the previous chef (excellent chef) as she did the rotas and ordering while he was there so he could focus on making changes (he was only there 7 months). The only thing I think I’d say she’s good at is being given simple jobs that she can just plough through. This is therapeutic but there’s just too much to write here. Sorry if you want more 😂

    It is to be noted that in most reviews of the golf game at this country club, the food is mentioned highly and even exceptional in comparison to other clubs.
    The real winner appears to be in the back of house and not at the pinset cup.
