The last three nights I have been hosted by my Australian friend who took me to dinner last night where we had an Octavius and tonight for a home cooked meal we enjoyed a Gibson and a St Hallet Old Block (above). My rating is that the Old Block is in the Grange Hermitage class. It’s the best of the three we had and a real banger.

Is the Australian style comparable with Syrahs from Northern Rhone? I’m really looking forward to trying Australian Shirazes… Hopefully this year.

I like both of those wines, beautiful fruit in both. If you are in the Barossa try these two vineyards 1. Kurtz – Schmick Shiraz 2. Neldner Road – Anything.

  3. You can get some good deals on St Hallett at the moment especially with AUD down. I got a three pack of the 2018 old blocks a few months ago for 237 AUD, which is probably only about $150 US.

Their 2021 Blackwell Shiraz and Higher Earth Syrah (latter Eden Valley) are my go-to at the moment, can get them at about 30-35 AUD/bottle.

Old Block is a solid wine but on par with Grange is a little wild haha glad you enjoyed though! Soo many Shiraz/Syrah to explore.
