As I wrote in my previous post, we just finished a big culinary trip through Asia. In my presvious post I ranked all the restaurants we went and as I promised i following up with reviews for the top 3. Onjium ranked 3rd in our list.
Onjium is a Korean fine dining restaurant that tried to capture the essence of Korean dining. Housed inside a "Traditional Culture Research Institute," Onjium reflects its name through its beautifully presented and organized flavors.
When visiting Onjium, you will notice the phrase "geombulru hwailbulchi," which signifies a simplicity that is not shabby, and a grandeur that is not extravagant. The high-quality ingredients really shine through in some very elegant and minimal dishes throughout the mean. Dining while overlooking Gyeongbokgung Palace, was definitely a treat and something that came as a surprise to us.
The beautifully conceived traditional Korean dishes at Onjium, are born from extensive research, and are truly remarkable. the chef gave us one of his cookbooks on the way out and it was a perfect gift . The menu is based on the noble class cuisine influenced by royal court food from the Joseon era. Everything is being paired with traditional liqueur and rice wine. Service is very casual but still professional, our waitress spoke perfectly English and could guide us through the menu. We would return back to the restaurant asap, it was really a unique experience to see Korean cuisine in its core.
