NYT opinion: “My Restaurant Was Named One of New York City’s Best. Here’s Why It Closed.”
Sharing this interesting article about the challenges of running a restaurant in NYC. I liked Contento (Harlem) a lot and it’s sad that they had to close.
Gift article.

I liked Contento a lot, too. I made sure to buy some wine at his shop this week.

So what I got out of this article is that this is just a basic bad business case. Their costs were too high and they vastly overestimated revenue, which seems to be the real issue.
Nothing to do with specific industry or healthcare or any crap. It’s just a business model that didn’t work. Tons of new businesses fail for these exact reasons.
Basically every new business screws up their cost and revenue forecasts. It sucks, ive been there, but all it is is that well, your business and idea just wasn’t as good as you thought it was. It happens. We learn.

Really eye-opening about the career paths you have in the restaurant industry, based solely on which healthcare benefits you’re willing to give up. We need universal healthcare so badly in this country. So many small businesses would bloom and survive with just this one neat trick.

Given that this is New York, why wasn’t he (and his staff) on fully subsidized ACA plans? They should have been eligible given their income levels. (Genuine question, not trying to start an argument).

>My chair costs about $13,000 out of pocket, some $6,000 of which gets reimbursed by my provider. In a comically dark turn, my insurer doesn’t cover the wheels.
Absolutely horrific behavior from his insurance provider.
