So I hung up these “habanero chiles” I bought from ShopRite to dry them. And I know next to nothing about drying peppers or anything. They have these dark spots on them now, is that normal? They’ve been hung up since Dec 26 in my basement. I’m expecting this to take another 2 or 3 weeks but the spots are kind of concerning. Is the fact that it’s winter an issue? Any other tips would also be appreciated. Thanks 🙂

  1. Any black spots would make me suspect mold starting to grow. I have rarely had luck hang drying mine and only in hotter dry weather. I use a cheap dehydrator from Amazon on the lowest setting for about a day and then grind them for powder. Good luck!

To dry them you have to cut them open and also have a solid source of heat. Like the sun or a dehydrator. The black is mold starting. If you want dried habanero Pepper flake I suggest purchasing Flat Iron Pepper Flake from Amazon. The company makes amazing stuff. I just got a blend of dried and smoked ancho, chipotle, and habanero flakes and they are to die for.

Also, if air drying them you should have them in an area that gets light. Direct sunlight. Darkness inhibits mold growth. Fyi. 👍

Habaneros skin is too thick, it’s nearly impossible to dry them like this
