A group in Scranton is again helping feed thousands of families across Lackawanna County.
SCRANTON, Pa. — Trunks are filled to the brim, as families get everything, they need for Christmas dinner.
Volunteers along north Washington Avenue are giving Santa a helping hand in Scranton this season.
“Trying to do our best, right? Send me from the north pole in my elf suit. “
This elf, also known as Brendan Wilson, has been helping with the family-to-family food giveaway for the past 6 years.
“It’s a well oiled machine today. We got everybody through. We had quite the rush from 8 until about 10 o’clock. We got them through quickly and now we’re just filling them as they come through.” said Wilson.
The giveaway has* to run like clockwork, as it’s no easy feat to feed four thousand families across Lackawanna County.
“I think there’s a misconception sometimes about who people think are coming. It is people who are working, we do serve a lot of elderly and a lot of families- a lot of young families. ” Said Linda Robeson, Family to Family Director.
Robeson says they’re doubling the number of families they fed last Christmas, as the need in the community boomed over the past year.
“It’s just an extra expense; you’re trying to buy all the toys for your family and a ham can be very expensive and all the trimmings to go with it.” said Robeson.
So, instead, they’re filling the trunks with just that.
As they have for nearly 40 years.
“It’s nice to be able to give back to the people and everyone is coming through, everyone’s in a good spirit with the holidays. It’s just nice to give back.” said Wilson.
Making sure hearts and tables are full this holiday season.
