Fired up this 3 year old used egg to do pizza and this stuff appeared. The previous owner cleaned it ONCE like 2 years ago, took ages to do myself. Anybody know if it’s just grease coming out from the high temp (500) or something else I should be concerned about? To be clear, that white stuff was not there when I started things up this morning.

I’ve never seen that before and I’m usually an optimist, but this looks like the beginning of the end. I hope I’m wrong.

Do you know what the previous used to clean it? Could be that product coming through that was soaked into the ceramic.
Maybe run it at a high heat a couple of times before cooking a thing and see if it stops coming out.

That stuff is the reason the previous owner got rid of his egg. Might need to do an exorcism.

The white substance coming out of your Big Green Egg (BGE) is likely efflorescence, a mineral deposit that forms when moisture inside the ceramic components evaporates and leaves behind salt or mineral residue on the surface. This can happen if moisture gets into the ceramic or if the grill is exposed to excessive humidity or rain.

    How to address it:
    1. Clean the area: Use a damp cloth or a mild vinegar solution to wipe off the residue.
    2. Prevent future buildup:
    • Store your BGE in a dry, covered location or use a high-quality grill cover.
    • Avoid leaving the grill outside in heavy rain or prolonged humidity.

If the substance is persistent or reappears, ensure there are no cracks or internal damage to the ceramic that could be allowing excess moisture to penetrate.
