I apologize in advance if this is something I should know already, but is this in area your supposed to deep clean? If so, how often?

I’m still relatively new to grilling, and it’s been a fun experience. Just started to get worries looking at this. For now, I’ve been using the edge of a box to clear some stuff off.

The bowl is most likely always the least cleaned part of any kettle. The grill grates are the most important as it’s the cooking surface. After that just make sure nothing that’s caked onto the top of the lid starts to flake off if so take a steel brush to it to clean that up. What you don’t want is ash build up in the bowl. Ash absorbs moisture and moisture corrodes and rusts the kettle and all its parts. Use a drip pan to collect juices when you can so they don’t mix with the ash and form a ash pattie that will turn into a cement like compound against your grill.

I suggest you get a small, tough, plastic brush meant for cleaning grout to push the greasy ash down into the ash catcher. The brush is hard plastic, cleans easily, hangs on the grill even in rainy weather, is generally not flammable, and is cheap. Also, line the ash bucket with aluminum foil to keep it clean and easier to throw out the greasy ashes.
