Trader Joes are only in white/asian areas

I’m sure they do extensive market research where their most profitable locations will be.

They wouldn’t currently put a TJs in Highland Park. That should tell you enough.

Maybe because theres a higher chance of what happened in the Silver Lake store in those areas. And people are vocal about gentrification in those areas.

  5. We dont need any more shady union busting, family recipe stealing criminals. Fuck Trader Joe’s

Is the USC location not geographically South LA?

It’s simple economics. They go where the median income is high and full of working professionals with post high school degrees.

Safety is also aligned with the previous mentioned data. Look at Nike opening a store in Watts after 2020 and how that location is robbed almost every month.

On one hand, there are so many articles if you Google, “Trader Joe’s gentrification” and the loudest voices are those saying no to Joe. On the other hand, we have folks accusing a grocery chain (a business) of being racist for not building in an area that wouldn’t be lucrative to them.

Truth is, South LA is a food desert with outrageous grocery prices which they also markup the price of due to theft and the like. Any restaurant that opens up around here doesn’t survive for long. Opening up a Trader Joe’s in South LA wouldn’t be the catalyst for gentrification that most think it is. Newsflash: South LA is slowly already being gentrified. What we need to do is vote locally to maintain South LA’s cultural presence while acknowledging the failure of our politicians as well as ourselves.

tl;dr We could use more grocery stores as our options are decreasing here in South LA, however, we should battle gentrification (read: NOT displacing decades of families out of their neighborhood) appropriately.

I would think TJ’s would kill in DTLA and Arts district

It’s not like TJs is much much better than Superior, food 4 less, or whatever. They are not marketed as healthy and organic as whole foods, even though their perception is “high quality” or at least hipster. Lower income people shouldn’t be spending on tons of frozen food. Remember the stupid receipt for the person with a family?
