CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — While shoppers may feel like they’re gobbling up inflation when buying ingredients to make Thanksgiving dinner, grocery stores in the Midstate say prices are about the same as last year and turkey prices are lower.

The day before Thanksgiving is the busiest for grocery stores leading up to the holiday. The Tuesday of Thanksgiving week is the second busiest day. A lot of shoppers wait to buy fresh turkeys and produce so that these items are as fresh as possible when it’s time to make the feast.

“The Thanksgiving meal is typically a pretty economical meal,” says Wegmans store manager Bob Finn. “Turkey is an inexpensive protein and all of the fixings that go along with it are inexpensive, especially this time of year.”

Wegmans says it’s selling a feast for a little more than $6 a serving for 8 people. That includes a 13 lbs. Shady Brook Farms Frozen Turkey, two McCormick brown gravy mixes, three yams, a Sara Lee Frozen Pie, and other Wegmans brand sides.

Karns Foods CEO Andrea Karns says fresh turkeys are around 20 cents lower per pound and frozen turkeys are around 30 cents lower this year. She says a lot of items have stayed the same, but vegetables may fluctuate.

“Brussel sprouts are cheaper than last year,” Karns says. “There have been some issues on fresh green beans due to the weather that took place this fall with the different rains and flooding, so that did see a little bit of a price growth.”
