The saddest most boring dinner I’ve seen. We brought her home cooked meals while she was there but this would have been her dinner if we hadn’t. Place was a poorly run nightmare, wish places like that could be run better

    It’s a hospital not a gourmet restaurant.

This is like me 2 weeks into Great Lent.  Not quite at hummus on crackers, but definitely getting there.  It’s a decent amount of veg, though.  They didn’t just leave the meat off.

    **The ~~saddest~~ healthiest ~~most boring~~ dinner I’ve seen**

Some of us like real food. I see a well balanced meal without any processed crap…

Gammy needs to start eating what the good lord made. 🐄

i feel like it should have some more carbs because it’s very low calorie. maybe cup of rice or second scoop of mashed potato

Is there even a complete protein on that table? Throwing a bunch of veg on a plate doesn’t make it vegetarian or nutritional

  7. c-compactdisc

This could be halfway decent if the vegetables were cooked better as opposed to appearing like they got dumped out of a can..

The Dabba is giving me desi vibes. Is she dadi or nani by any chance d

I don’t know why, but I always ate the heck out of my hospital food. I’d ask for extra butter, put it on everything, and proceed to ask for another plate after I got done🤣

Short of some protein that is a good ol’ southern dinner… am I missing something?

A tablespoon of Cole slaw and macaroni salad in a pill case.

Doesn’t look half bad for hospital food 🤷‍♀️

I worked in a hospital kitchen for a decade. I get that hospital food is bad, but considering Medicare only reimburses something like 1.58$ a meal, it’s not that bad. Feeding 700 patients for a bit over a grand feels daunting, especially when there are so many diets that each product needs to be able to fit into (low sodium, kosher, softened, vegetarian, etc.). I’m not defending the food, because it sucks… but all things considered it could be worse.

Better than what they give for a gluten free diet lol

the comment thread got me curious about the nutritional value of this meal. someone please correct me if i’m wrong/inaccurate with any of this. i used myfitnesspal and obviously this is a rough estimate but here goes…

    • 1/3 cup cashews: 213 cals

    • 1/2 cup diced pears (i think?): 22 cals

    • 1/2 cup coleslaw: 124 cals

    • 1 cup carrots: 50 cals

    • 1 cup green beans: 31 cals

    • 1/2 cup mashed potatoes: 140 cals

this makes the total calories 581 and the macro ratio is 46% (61g) carbs, 44% (26g) fat, and 10% (12g) protein. i guess the two main issues from a nutritional standpoint are that: 1) this meal is pretty high in fat, and 2) there’s no complete protein. the cashews are a good source, they don’t contain all 9 essential amino acids that our bodies need. adding beans or rice would solve that issue.

the hospital seems to be taking advantage of the fact that fiber keeps people fuller for longer. there’s ~16g in this meal which is about half of what you need in a day. you could definitely survive off something like this, but there’s no doubt this is the laziest way a hospital could make a vegetarian meal. glad your gma has y’all to give her better

    That looks pretty solid.

I’m down to rail on some slop, but if I got that in the hospital I’d be fine with it.

  17. unbalancedmoon

honestly this looks great compared to some hospital food I had (it hurts to remember)

  18. Coleslaw and cashews? In this economy? And you’re complaining?

  19. TequieroVerde

Not too bad… I imagine the hospital that I’ll attend one day will only serve complimentary peanuts.

  20. GingerFire29

Do we know WHY grandma is in the hospital? Is literally no one going to mention that diet and nutritional needs can vary person to person, based on condition. Certain foods may be restricted.

This looks better than what I got after birthing my deceased infant son 🥴😅

Quit bitching, it looks nutritious and delicious.
