I bought a Coleman Roadtrip gas grill (1st photo. Red grill).
I've never used a gas grill before. I don't want the middle part of the grate (the solid part without holes).
Can I replace the grate with something like on the 2nd photo? Is it safe?
I'm used to using charcoal grillers.

I mean as long as it fits on the grill and isn’t about to fall off I don’t see why it would be unsafe. Just don’t mess with anything that the gas goes through
I have this exact grill. I have used it up at 10,000 feet above sea level and also here in Vegas before a race. That thing cooks no matter what and uses very little fuel. The grates seemed weird to me, and the water tray…..it was confusing. The grates for me will get you a good sear, and use that water pan. It helps with cleanup big time. I just scrape everything into the tray and boom it’s clean. Hope you enjoy it!
I’ve had 2 of these. The pictures show the exact same thing. It’s a 2 piece grate, the middle is just where they come together. So you know, they do sell additional inserts to use one or both sides as a burner. I did find them useful when camping, protein on a grill grate on one side, rice or pasta on a burner on the other.
