Is this a good sushi to try/start with? Do I need soy sauce? Served cold or room temp? Any tips?

I’d try a restaurant for sushi. Go somewhere that does stir fry too and just order a simple roll in addition to something else you got sure like, in case you don’t like the sushi lol

That’s a bizarre looking Cali roll.

That looks like crab salad in a tube.

    I’m not impressed.

Don’t judge sushi on that experience. That rice looks like it’s going to be terrible, but the krab mix should be similar to most places

No, that doesn’t look at all like a california roll. Also, best to start with fresh sushi from a restaurant rather than prepackaged rolls

Sushi from a gas station is rarely a good idea. Unless you’re in Apex, NC. Then it’s a really great idea.

Packaged sushi will give you the worst first experience. The rice is often stale and the contents within are often dry.

Give yourself the opportunity to visit a sushi restaurant and try the things that *sound* tasty. A california roll is very basic and a good introduction for most people. Moving on to any roll with either tuna or salmon is very easy, and are a staple among any sushi joint.

Once you’re finally feeling adventurous, try some of the more ‘fishy’ fish like Albacore, (I personally like Halibut). Additionally, you can give Eel a shot. I swear I thought I’d dislike it but Eel has a very similar texture to chicken and boy is it tasty.

Additionally, ‘baked’ rolls are basically cheating. It’s fried fish with rice and is basically comfort food. Definitely give them a shot!

I don’t eat squid/octopus personally, so leave that up to yourself. The texture of Cephalopods are very chewy and gummy. I also personally think that anything that can screw itself out of a jar deserves to live.

Apart from that, know that ginger and wasabi act effectively as ‘pallet cleansers’. It’s normal to eat multiple types of rolls when dining out, and sushi flavors tend to stick to the tongue. Both wasabi and ginger act to help reset your taste.

    Good luck, it’s good stuff.

I try to avoid packaged supermarket sushi. They arent bad, but they arent fresh.

Those look terrible. Don’t judge sushi by that crap.

Heads up these are horrible. If you want packaged sushi try market district if you have one near you if not a restaurant is the way to go california rolls are a good start if you are afraid of raw fish

I ate the before, they suck

Maybe go and get an actual sushi from sushi restaurant

  12. Don’t even eat that. It goes to the store frozen and they thaw it out when it’s stocked.

Go to an all you can eat sushi spot!!

Allows you try a variety and if you don’t like it, you still have many other options to eat like fried tempura or grilled meats.

The turnover is higher too so the sushi will likely be hand warm, as should be eaten.

Go order sushi at a reputable restaurant if you want to learn about sushi. That being said, get some wasabi and some quality soy or tamari, and some pickeled ginger to eat that with. It looks sad.

I’m pretty sure this came from a high school cafeteria lunch in California.

  16. HoodiesNHelmets

This is an unfortunate first taste of sushi for you. Don’t let it deter you from well made sushi lol

Good sushi is fresh fish/seafood. If you’d like to learn more about it, go to a proper sushi restaurant, sit at the sushi bar and (when it’s not extremely busy) tell the chef you’ve never had it before, and you’d like recommendations.

Better to check your location for sushi-specific restaurants if you want to try out different types of sushi especially nigiri. Be mindful to check if the place is a “fusion” one, too.

Check this video from PaolofromTokyo so you can get an idea of what a typical restaurant is like.

Are you in the Midwest? I’ve seen these around me and they’re kinda ass

  20. IDontAgreeSorry

Hell nah. If you’ve never eaten sushi start with salmon nigiri, salmon avocado maki, or tuna if you prefer raw tuna, and eel nigiri. Maybe a hand roll/temaki even, with salmon inside or caviar. From a restaurant, there are also good sushi sold in some supermarkets with a small stand next to the seafood isle where they make it fresh, we have it here in Europe I’m sure there are boxes like that in the USA as well. Like this: https://media.auchan.fr/A0220161125000305726PRIMARY_750x750/B2CD/ What you bought is going to throw you off sushi, absolute terrible first experience I’m sorry. It’s good that you’re willing to try new things though!!! Just grant yourself the actual experience.

  21. maryloaf

Dont let that be your first sushi experience

  22. Rumnraisans

That does not look good. I would not eat that. I don’t think it’ll taste anything like sushi either.

  23. MrN1ghtsh4d3

Why does the rice look like plastic?

  24. TenaciousTiger666

This has to be bait, they sell that shit at Sheetz.

  25. Main-Business-793

Go to a restaurant and tell them what you just told us. They’ll take care of you.

  26. supershawninspace

OP gets food poisoning from the first gas station sushi they tried.

  27. Raithed

If this is your first time, don’t buy that and go eat at a proper sushi restaurant near you. Go on Yelp or wherever, look at the reviews and look at their menu. Get a bunch of sashimi, and rolls, and whatever else you think you’d enjoy. If you’re allergic, no problem, usually the menu tells you what is in it. Have fun.

Always try sushi for the first time at a nice restaurant. Store bought sushi can vary in quality
