I just started decorating this past December. I am currently using this royal icing recipe and timeless bags.

I practiced some Valentine's Cookies today, and my font is awful. I had thickened my royal icing up with a couple tbs of cocoa powder (I read that it would use less black dye that way).

Please bombard me with all of your tips and tricks for writing. Also, outlining! Idk if it was just too thick or if it was because I didn't have a tip on the bag, but it just wasn't a smooth process.

Your cookies look great, especially for a beginner!

For writing and outlines, I use a thicker “piping” consistency icing. You want to make it thick enough to hold its shape, but not so thick it’s difficult to pipe or breaks often. It might take a little while to perfect! Add just a few drops of water at a time until it gets to the consistency you want.

As for tips, I usually use a Wilton 2 or 3, but sometimes I just go tipless and cut a small bit off the tip of my icing bag. If you do that, smooth the bag so the seam is at the top before you snip it.

Also, something that helps especially for outlining is to actually hold your bag above and let the icing “fall” onto the cookie. I’m not sure that makes good sense but I’m sure if you look up some outlining videos on YouTube you can find examples.

Good luck and have fun on your cookie journey!

I go tipless unless I need something specific. I use the bags from Borderlands Bakery.
