(KALB) – The Food Bank of Central Louisiana is back with the annual Christmas Cheer Food Drive for the holiday season!
Every year, the food bank and the local schools work together to collect food that goes directly to people in need in those communities.
During November, students were asked to bring non-perishable items and canned goods to their schools. This week, the food bank is going to Natchitoches, Vernon, Grant, Avoyelles and Rapides Parishes to weigh in the collected foods.
Natchitoches Parish
Starting in Natchitoches Parish, 3,001 pounds were collected from five participating schools.
The winners for Natchitoches Parish were Fairview Alpha Elementary School with 210 pounds, Natchitoches Magnet with 853 pounds and Natchitoches Central High School with 505 pounds.
Vernon Parish
Next up in Vernon Parish, 14,885 pounds were collected from six participating schools.
The winners for Vernon Parish were Rosepine Elementary School with 3,829 pounds, Vernon Middle School with 497 pounds and Rosepine High School with 6,207 pounds.
Grant Parish
In Grant Parish, 8,000 pounds were collected from five participating schools.
The winners for Grant Parish were South Grant Elementary School with 3,927 pounds, Grant Junior High School with 354 pounds and Georgetown High School with 1,314 pounds.
Avoyelles Parish
In Avoyelles Parish, 13,192 pounds were collected from eight participating schools.
The winners for Avoyelles Parish were Plaucheville Elementary School with 2,951 pounds and Bunkie High School with 5,024 pounds.
Rapides Parish
In Rapides Parish, 21,213 pounds were collected from 20 participating schools.
The winners for Rapides Parish were Phoenix Magnet Elementary School with 4,187 pounds, Pineville Junior High with 1,911 pounds and Glenmora High School with 1,387 pounds.
Phoenix Magnet Elementary School also took home the prize for donating the most pounds per student which was 13.42 pounds.
In total the food bank was able to get 60,291 pounds in food.
Eight thousand dollars in prize money from the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe will be distributed to these schools for their outstanding efforts to help the Food Bank of Central Louisiana.
