this shrimp sauce is the closest thing i could find ar my asian grocer as they have whole little shrimp so i thought this might work as substitute for saeu jeot. im not sure if the one in the image is the exact same but it was a bottle like that and all it said was shrimp sauce it was filled with little shrimp and a bit of brine. also whats the best way i can make gochugaru substitute with normal chilis and flakes because ive looked it up and it said everywhere thats all gochugaru is so im confused why everyone says you need the korean one.

It’s hard to tell from the blurry imagine but it certainly looks like what it’s meant to look like.
Just make sure that the ingredients are pretty much just shimp & salt
According to some blog posts from Koreans living abroad, this apparently tastes exactly the same!
To my knowledge though, any salty brine should work. You use salt to control the salinity anyway, the shrimp is for flavor. The fish flavors used in Kimchi differ by region in Korea too.
Not to mention Kimchi made from vegetarian monks in Korea don’t use shrimp brine and it tastes great.
It is not Korean. Try to avoid it. You can make kimchi without fish/shrimp sauce.
This is cincalok, which comes from south east Asia. It’s usually made with salt and rice.
I personally can’t tell the difference in taste, so i say go for it.
We can’t find anything close in my little coastal Norwegian town.
It’s not ideal but I use a mix of thai shrimp paste and squid brand fish sauce instead.
It works and while not “traditional” we really enjoy the taste and don’t think it tastes that much different to premade kimchi we occasionally buy.
Gochugaru is just Korean chili powder so if you have Korean chilis and can grind them into a powder I’m pretty sure it’s the same thing. But you can get massive bags of it from any Asian grocery store so idk if I’d go through all that trouble tbh
Did some reverse searching. Looks like this is Cincalok Shrimp Paste, which is Malaysian, which is similar to sewoo jeot. I don’t think it’s a direct 1-to-1, but I feel like this one could work.
