Are we talking on the home smoker?

Baked beans are tough to beat, but I might go with sweet potatoes. So easy to just throw ’em on there alongside whatever meat you’re smoking. Hit ’em with butter and brown sugar: insanity.

I like “cool” sides for meals that are centered around heavy meats, especially smoked meats. pickles, coleslaw, potato salad, macaroni salad. currently obsessed with cowboy caviar. don’t forget the bread and butter!!

  3. Vricrolatious

Mac’n’cheese is always the right choice… especially if you get it into the smoker before serving.

  4. Don’t get me wrong I love Mac and cheese, but it feels like overkill with smoked beef/pork. Just too much fat and richness. I think it is best to pair with smoked chicken.

Mac n Cheese definitely number one! But we like to do a tomato and cucumber salad, cause as some people mentioned, lighter sides tend to complement the heavy meats. A good, crisp green bean air-fry is also really tasty!

  6. KlooShanko

Corn bread is perfectly quick and easy so that’s my pick

Naw, thstsbjust too much heavy sides to pair with heavy meats. I need more vegetables and vinegar for my sides.

Ideally some kinda of slaw and roasted veggies or mexican street corn

Cheesy Potatoes. Hash Brown Casserole. Funeral Potatoes. Party Potatoes. Relief Society Potatoes. So many different names but this is my go to.

Hot take: Mac n cheese aint a damn side dish, it’s a meal people eat in small amounts next to their meat. Potato salad, Cole slaw, baked beans…these are sides.

Sue me but the best side is Brocollini with olive oil flash-grilled over the flame and hit with sea salt

Mac is the obvious #2 but it’s so heavy and fatty. You snack the Brocollini off the grill, it’s a great companion with beef, it’s light, it’s green

  11. Eaglehammerhead

Potato Salad, Mac and cheese , corn bread casserole

Filipino checking in–no one will be surprised when I say steamed rice is my #1 side. But oddly enough, a couple Super Bowls ago I had conflicting requests in my family and ended up making ribs & sushi, which was an amazing pairing. So for me, steamed rice #1, mac n cheese #2, sushi #3

Maybe an unpopular opinion but Collard Greens are my top side!

  14. A good baked Mac n cheese is divine. A good bbq beans is divine too. I would rather have standard beans over standard Mac n cheese because standard Mac n cheese is just the cheese sauce kind. It all depends on how good they are.

  15. TackoFell

Mildly sweet “northern style” corn bread is easily my favorite to cook and eat. I think Mac and cheese is clearly the king side, but I only like, not love it.

My go to is cabbage slaw, smoked and smashed potatoes, pickled veggies, deviled eggs, bbq beans, potato salad, green bean casserole, collard greens, and corn bread or hawaiian rolls.

I love mac and cheese but I have had so many bland/boring ones I usually don’t try them anymore at restaurants. Now the beans on the other hand always taste different if they are made in house. I have never have had horrible beans and I have had some I always go back for.

Being from Eastern NC, there is no such thing as bbq without hushpuppies and coleslaw.

  19. GambleTheGod00

Potato salad, baked beans, and mashed potatoes

  20. Man_Without_Nipples

OP did you make that mac n cheese? Cause wow, it looks amazing.

I’m with you man, Mac n cheese is my numero uno side.

  21. ItsTheTed

I’m down with Mac and Cheese but think I’m a bit of a TX BarBQ Traditionalist, which would need to have coleslaw high in the list.
While not a true side, white bread, raw onions and pickles need to be present also.

  22. Seamonkey_Boxkicker

Sometimes baked beans are too sloppy and sugary. Hard to turn down mac n cheese on any occasion, though.

  23. luckyswine

If it’s good BBQ, the sides (and sauce) are irrelevant. Then again, there are far more BBQ joints with good sides than there are ones with good BBQ.

  24. Legitimate_Door_627

Mac n Cheese, no other sides can touch it.
