Copied from an eating healthy lecture I took a few years back about healthy lifestyle habits amongst people who live in Blue Zones (cities around the earth where populations tend to have an unusually high number of centenarians or people who live to or past 100):
Plant-based diets • Minimal meat consumption, primarily plant-based foods • Focus on whole, unprocessed ingredients (vegetables, legumes, whole grains) • Use of healthy fats like olive oil or nuts
Regular, low-intensity physical activity • Daily movement integrated into life (gardening, walking, manual labor) • Hilly or natural environments encourage regular activity
Strong social connections • Close-knit communities reduce loneliness and foster support • Strong family and friend networks
A sense of purpose • Known as “ikigai” (Okinawa) or “plan de vida” (Nicoya) • Having a reason to wake up every day improves mental health
Stress management • Practices include meditation, prayer, naps, and nature rituals • Stress is minimized through daily habits and reflection
Moderation in eating • “80% rule” (stop eating when 80% full) • Smaller portions, especially during dinner
Strong spiritual or religious practices • Faith-based communities provide belonging and structure • Regular spiritual practices or Sabbath observance
Drinking in moderation • Moderate alcohol consumption, especially red wine (socially, not excessively)
Connection to nature • Living close to natural environments promotes well-being
Multigenerational living • Families often live together or nearby, fostering mutual care
