Recently returned from a trip from Taiwan/Fukuoka trip and had a few fine dining stops at Sushi Sakai, Tenzushi and Nihonryori Beppu Hirokado.

Sakai is rated 4.52 on Tabelog and Gold status and as of right now rated 10th amongst sushi restaurants in Japan. I booked thru tablecheck. They release seats 3-4 months ahead of time so with proper planning it should be relatively bookable. Lunch and dinner are the same and costs 44,000 yen. There were 12 people at the counter so definitely one of the larger sushiyas I’ve been to. They do offer wine, sake or tea pairings but for myself I had just a sake and some tea.

My meal for the day was 7 Tsunami and 14 Nigiris. I was somewhat full by the end of the meal but to be honest I prefer not to be overstuffed these days so I was happy. The shari at Sakai is on the saltier side than other sushiyas I have visited. I’m guessing they use more soy vs vinegar in their ratio. Everything was excellent and I would highly recommend a visit if you’re in Fukouka. The staff and Sakai-San are very friendly and could speak some English. As for the potential dreaded gaijin corner, I was seated directly in front of him.

I will try to make posts for Tenzushi and Beppu Hirokado if people would like or any other places I have visited in the past.

    I’ve heard Fukuoka is the home and origin of the best traditional tonkotsu ramen, with places in NYC name dropping the region.
