Tried out taco tuesday at Botanero after seeing it listed on their website, been meaning to try them out since they opened nearby a couple months ago in Wicker Park.

The draw for the night is $3.50 street tacos $8 margaritas, and some more expensive gourmet taco specials. I don’t think their normal menu is available based on the menu I had sitting down tonight. The printed menu also had some normal menu cocktails and beers and I think some starters that I didn’t look too hard at since my plan was to fill up on tacos.

The tacos were great, I forgot to confirm but the tortillas seemed handmade blue corn. The meat fillings were high quality, like the asada was larger chunks of skirt and the carnitas was big chunks of pork and not shredded. I got asada, carnitas, barbacoa, chicken pozole off the “street tacos” and the taco negro de asada off the gourmet section (ribeye, bone marrow, and i forget exactly what else).

The street tacos were tasty, feel like amazing value considering how hard it is to find cheap tacos anymore, and they aren’t pulling any punches on quality or effort on them compared to their normal output. The gourmet asada I had was very tasty and enjoyable, but it wasn’t great value since the cost was much more than the street tacos were. It was also quite greasy. Still happy I got it, but the distinction seems important.

Definitely looking forward to going back for taco tuesday again and trying their regular menu. I know its cold out but it was more empty than it feels like it should be, I hope this place can stick around.

I didn’t really take pictures planning to share so apologies for the quality/lighting. First photo is the gourmet taco and two asada to the right. Second one is carnitas in the foreground and barbacoa behind it.
