Heyo! I’ve been here for two nights now.

Terry Black’s
-solid, quick service. I had the brisket and turkey.
Both enjoyable, brisket on the drier side. Lives up to what I’ve read here, solid but not amazing. A reliable go-to.

Leroy & Lewis
-a noticeable step up from Terry Black’s, in my novice opinion. I tried the brisket and beef cheeks, both supremely tender and flavourful. Creative sides and dishes in general.

Franklin
-I arrived here at 10:59 and had about 30-50 people infront of me. I was pleasantly surprised by that. I was eating by 12PM. I think the grim weather kept people at home.

I had brisket, jalapeno sausage, turkey and pork ribs. All delicious. The brisket is the noticeable star of the show, easily the most flavoursome out of what I’d tried. I’m not sure if it’s overall worth a several hour wait, as the others were very nice with zero wait. However, if it’s about an hour then I think it’s worthwhile.

Other than the renowned BBQ scene, I’ve tried breakfast tacos at both Granny’s Taco and Joe’s Bakery. I had some Al pastor from a food truck, Oye Taquito, some donuts from Voodoo. I also gave Golden Castle a go to test out the difference to White Castle (noticeable upgrade).

I’m not sure what to try next before I leave. I was saddened to hear K Gs is only open from Thursday. I may not be here by then. Valentina’s being closed was an unfortunate curve ball too, heard good things about their breakfast taco.

All in all, so far so good. Y’all have a lot of choice here and a lot of it is very solid. I’m in the East Austin area but am willing to reasonably travel.

Interstellar looks a bit far, so maybe next time.

Thanks for reading. Lovely city you have here 🙂

In East Austin – Go sit at the bar at Suerte and ask the bartender what to order.

  2. I recently did Terry Blacks, Interstellar, Franklin’s and Micklewaits. Micklewaits was my favorite, and also the best value imo. 2 meat plate that comes with 2 sides for $22. . So maybe try that one next?

Edit: also try Knuckle sandwich and get their namesake sandwich.

Valentina’s Reopened in the parking lot of a gas station in deep south Austin called “Beer Geek”

I’d Have a burger & tots at Dirty’s & also hit Happy hour apps at 24 diner; browse Waterloo next door before you leave town.

The terry black’s brisket you got was on the drier side because they gave you the flat. Next time you get brisket, always make sure to ask for the point which is the fattier stuff. You have to explicitly ask for it because otherwise, you’ll get the flat because there’s tons of it as everyone else is asking for the point.

I’d gladly sit in the mist (maybe not rain) on the cold picnic table in back of Sandy’s to enjoy one of their burgers.

Depending on the hike you want to make the trip up to Louis Mueller in Taylor. Top notch, Texas granddaddy BBQ (where Franklin learned).

If you’re still here on Thursday, try the BBQ Fiends food truck in Hutto. Completely out of this world BBQ (esp their brisket elote) and they just recently got a well deserved mention from TM.

KG is also worth the visit if you’re still here on Thursday but actually skip the brisket with them. I found their brisket to be really underwhelming. The brisket was cooked too hot and fast making it a bit tough and dry. However, the lamb chops and lamb bacon are divine and every one of their sides SLAPS (except the Mac & cheese)!

Glad you’re enjoying what Austin has to offer so far!! Have fun in your travels and thank you for visiting our city 🙂

If you’re chilling in the east side, make sure to stop by Whistlers for some of the best cocktails in town.

  8. If you want to stick with BBQ but with a twist, check out Loro, Kemuri Tatsuya, or Distant Relatives.

Judging by your spelling, I can only assume you are from Europe. So I think you should sit down for a big plate of Tex-Mex. Enchiladas, rice, beans, chips & salsa, a margarita.

Love this, OP. Thanks for the review. I may have missed this but where are you from?

So many good eats in East Austin – Suerte, Canje, Buenos Aires Cafe, and Veracruz are some of my faves.

Otherside deli has fantastic pastrami sandwiches if you want something slightly different

Try Brown’s BBQ trailer at the Corner Bar on South Lamar and West Mary. Damm good BBQ and drinks while you eat!

What Austin Beerworks beer is that? Never seen that one!

Well chosen on the taco places! What did you have at Granny’s? Their migas taco is the best migas in town IMO. Also for amazing old school tex-mex, I’d recommend Polvo’s on South 1st. Their frozen margaritas are great and the food is high quality.

Down to try more BBQ, could head up to Brotherton’s in Pflugerville.

Most bbq in Austin is good, most of the sides are terrible and or have limited choices. Terry blacks and coopers have the best sides for my interests
