I had a few surprise plants last season bc my cats played with the tags so I wanted to upgrade my game this year.
How do you keep your plants apart?
Had some stickers (paper and waterproof) and store bought "single use" signs last year to mark the singular pots, selfprinted tags in petg should improve the situation by a lot now 😀
No runny or washed away letters, should hold many years and custom made in a few minutes (a piece)

Normally, my tried and true method is to use a sharpie on little plastic labels, and then the sharpie gets washed off by watering or faded by the sun, and then I have no idea what any of my plants are.
This year, I’ve taken photos of each place I’ve planted something and added annotations for what each plant is.
I use plastic tags, 3-4″ and a nursery permanent marker because it has UV-protectant in it so your marks don’t fade away. Nothing else is as break-proof and easy.
Ooooh. I typically try to recycle popsicle sticks but they do go missing. My problem is theft by critters and kids, and me knocking them out.
However, this idea makes me wonder about adding a more fixed label slot to the trays, with petg labels. Kind of like multiboard labels, maybe.
Painters tape
By the time the labels get washed away with help of my memory and autism spectrum I’m capable of recognising my plants without tags. 😂
If anyone in Europe is interested in labels like mine, I can share the link to the model
or help with the text/printing part 😀
Edit:
for reference the labels on the pic are 140g of petg and 2.5h of print time
so ~ 4€ worth
for “never coming off” labeled tags
0.9mm lead pencil on plastic tags.
The pencil doesn’t fade like a sharpie. (I didn’t know about nursery markers with UV protection until this here thread).
The thicker lead for darkness.
Sharpie on the outside rim of a 3″ peat pot has worked best for me. the plant can get separated from a tag, but (hopefully) can’t get separated from its pot!
I made the mistake of using wooden popsicle sticks this year and they rotted and I have no idea what is what anymore.
Never again.
Previously I would use plastic plant tags with a china marker and that worked great. Sharpies fade in a few months.
Spreadsheet for separate trays/shelves.
I use those twist tie tags that you write the sku on in the bulk section at the grocery store. They’re free so I just grab a bunch when I’m there. I write on them with pen and fold it down the side of the pot. That way they don’t get in the way when watering or moving them

I use tape + black marker on the pot. The tape has the name of the plant and an ID#. I have a spreadsheet with the details. If the tape comes off (only happened to me twice out of ~30 pots last year), I just replace it. I can’t be bothered struggling to write on sticks or deal with tags. If I’m doing a cross, I tie a little twine or burlap string nearby. Also, pictures. Pics are free and easy documentation, but it’s up to you to sort them after, lol
Fwiw, I also keep a notebook and draw a diagram of the trays. I paint a spot so I can orient properly and just fill in the grid with name and date sown. This works great providing I don’t lose the notebook.
I use a plastic label on which I use a paper tape, on which I write so that it doesn’t get washed away
