I am in a hotel in Zermatt and see wines on display that I only know from this forum. If you could only choose one, what would you try?

  1. Mugneret Gibourg would be my instant choice.

Then, it would depends on budget. Maybe those Leoville Barton could be quality price contender.

Condreiu or Grange! But there are SO MANY worth a taste, so integrate price as needed—cheers!

  3. 51 cheval blanc or 1995 Vega Sicilia Unico… among many others

The early 2000 Smith Lafite’s should be great!

  6. I agree that this question is impossible to answer without knowing your budget. Personally, I get a bit irritated when hotels and restaurants charge extreme amounts even for fantastic wine, but I guess I just don’t like getting ripped off.
Last year in Zermatt you could buy first growth claret (Mouton & Margaux) from the little wine shop attached to the supermarket in the centre of town, just along from the Gornergrat departure station. I think it’s called Migros on Hofmattstrasse. The prices were high but not extreme.
Choosing a wine is very personal. For me, it would be easy. After I climbed the Matterhorn with my girlfriend 30 years ago, I bought a bottle of 1986 Chateau Talbot which we drank out of plastic beakers at our camp site. Having broken both my femurs in a car crash 2 years previously this was a huge achievement for me. So this wine has a special place in my mind. You can buy a bottle of Chateau Talbot from the Monte Rosa Hotel which is the most historic hotel in Zermatt with lots of old climbing photos and memorabilia. So that’s where I would go, but I can recommend the place as worth a visit even if you’ve never climbed the Matterhorn. Enjoy your stay!

Krug, Billecart-Salmon, or the Louis Roderer. Champagne is always the right answer. 🍾🥂

Haut Brion but budget choice would be the Calon Segur.

Mugneret-Gibourg Echezeaux without the doubt. Only had some village Vosne-Romanee and lieu dits yet and they were so good.
