FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU) – Amid record demand, Fairbanks Community Food Bank CEO Anne Weaver says the nonprofit needs the community’s help to reach their goal of providing a record 3,300 Thanksgiving meals this year.
Weaver says the number of families currently being served daily is higher than the nonprofit has ever seen.
“That’s not my favorite answer, but with the rising prices, that’s what we’ve been seeing,” Weaver said.
In response, the food bank raised its Thanksgiving meal goal by 800 boxes. That comes as volunteers working toward the Thanksgiving meal goal also continue to collect items at the nonprofit’s warehouse for families’ day-to-day needs.
“Last year, we planned for 2,500 households. We had 3,099 households and this year we’re watching our numbers go up,” Weaver explained.
While she hopes to have a turkey in every food box, Weaver said there are no guarantees.
“We can never promise a turkey in every box, but our goal is to promise food for Thanksgiving, for a meal. We don’t want anybody to go to Thanksgiving without,” she said, later adding, “What a good thing to be able to do to help somebody smile at a holiday time.”
Those looking to pick up a Thanksgiving meal on Nov. 27, the day before the holiday, can do so at First Presbyterian Church between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
A location will also be available for those living in or near North Pole, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
More information about utilizing the food bank’s services, as well as how to donate, can be found on the food bank’s website.
