I rage quit trying to slice my crusty sourdough after doing a number on my pointer finger over the weekend, and ordered an electric slicer. Nothing crazy, there are multiple options available online for around $100 that do a fine job.
It just arrived and I used it to slice up the rest of the loaf. HOW DID I LIVE WITHOUT THIS? It cuts through the crust like butter and gives perfectly even slices.
I also make a ton of seitan, so I think I'll get my money's worth out of it.
Just wanted to share in case anyone else has been frustrated with their bread knives not cutting it with their thick-crusted loaves 😆

I also learned having a bread slicer is a pretty common household item in Germany, which I love. I’m very happy to be part of the brotschneidemaschine club now.
Sounds interesting! Do you have a link to what you bought?
Is it specifically a bread slicer or just a deli slicer? Those often can go wide enough for bread slices as well.
I keep looking at them. I’m gonna need a bigger kitchen.
This is the way.
This is such an American statement.
Cut myself terribly on Sunday night trying to get slices of crusty bread too. Really annoyed overall, haven’t cut myself cooking since I was like 18. My knife is sharp AF too, and its a dedicated serrated bread knife that I don’t use for anything else. I don’t even know what happened, knife fell sideways off the bread into my finger/knuckle in a different direction that I even understand (which wasn’t in the cutting path at all).
It was like an intentionally super crusty and open crumb bread to dip in soup bcus I love how a crust holds up to soup. Apparently I need to be very careful with it ugh
put up a pic of the slicer, or video
I bought a meat slicer to slice my bread. I cannot look back. It was very funny that I got so excited over consistent slices of bread.Â
I’m clumsy on a good day, and slicing sourdough has caught me a couple times. Last time it was my poor thumb on Christmas and I held up opening presents because my stupid thumb would not stop bleeding. Mom had to come dump cornstarch on it, then I sat there looking like I was trying to hitchhike and opened most of my gifts one handed ðŸ˜ðŸ˜‚
So, yes, I am considering an electric slicer too. Or maybe even an electric bread knife, do those work or are they just for comedy thanksgiving scenes?
