A study of Google search trends conducted by Unscramblerer.com has revealed the most popular Christmas cookies in every state in the country this holiday season.

Newsweek has put the findings into a new map, showing a variety of regional preferences, from classic recipes to inventive twists, as Americans gear up for the holidays.

The research, carried out from December 1 to 10, examined searches for “Christmas cookies” to uncover each state’s top trending treat.

While the results showcase a mix of familiar favorites like gingerbread and sugar cookies, they also include some surprises. For instance, Alabama’s most popular cookie is the Oreo Christmas Cookie, while Californians are searching for Christmas Monster Cookies.

Italian Christmas Cookies

Topping searches in six states, including Texas, Nebraska, and Vermont, these almond-flavored or ricotta-based cookies are a holiday favorite.

Gingerbread Cookies

A classic Christmas treat, this cookie is the most searched in states like Alaska, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.

M&M Christmas Cookies

Popular in states such as Michigan, Massachusetts, and Utah, these colorful and festive cookies are a go-to for many families.

Peppermint Christmas Cookies

Loved in Montana, Oregon, and Wyoming, these cookies combine refreshing peppermint flavor with sweet holiday cheer.

Across the country, Italian Christmas Cookies have emerged as the leading treat in six states, including Idaho, Nebraska, and Texas. These confections, which are often almond-flavored, have become synonymous with festive celebrations in many households.

Meanwhile, traditional favorites like Gingerbread Cookies dominate in states such as Alaska and Arkansas, underscoring the enduring appeal of classic holiday recipes.

In the South, Snickerdoodle Cookies and Shortbread Christmas Cookies capture the spirit of the season, topping searches in Kentucky, Missouri, and other states.

Chocolate Peppermint Cookies are particularly popular in Indiana and New York, reflecting the cookie’s perfect blend of rich and refreshing flavors.

A spokesperson for Unscramblerer.com told Newsweek in an email statement, “Cookies have become a cornerstone of American Christmas traditions, dating back to the Great Depression in the 1930s when families began leaving them for Santa to teach children about generosity during hard times.”

They added that the word “cookie” itself has roots in Dutch culture, originating from “koekje,” meaning “little cake,” introduced to the United States by settlers in the 17th century.

The study also found that “Christmas wreath cookies with corn flakes” is trending nationally with a surge of 3750 percent in search interest. This no-bake recipe, often made with marshmallows and decorated with red candies, has become a popular option for quick and festive baking.
