Finally got around to setting some dried sourdough starter aside in case I ever drop or bake my starter. What kind of containers do y’all store your dried sourdough starter in? This is a small 4 or 5 oz jar. I know you only need a few grams to bring dried starter back to life, but it doesn’t hurt to have way more than necessary. Haha

Also, is there a shelf life on dehydrated starter?

  1. I need to do this too. I have no idea what the shelf life is.

In theory, there really isn’t a shelf life

I keep dehydrated starter in the freezer but in theory it should be fine left in the jar at room temp or in the fridge, if it’s truly dehydrated.

I keep mine in the freezer. Does it need it? I don’t know, but I feel better about it

I dehydrated some last night actually! Just put it in a ziploc bag for now, but I’ll probably get a jar or vacuum seal.

Freeze drying would be even better. But yeah good idea!

I dehydrated some starter a few years ago and just kept it in a plastic zip bag in a cabinet. I revived it in January and have already made two successful loaves. I think just keeping moisture out should work!

  9. How do you dehydrate it?
Do you simply leave it uncovered on the counter for a few days until it dries out?

I put mine in a tiny jelly jar and vacuum sealed it. Not sure if that’s right but I figured it would work.

  11. I have dried sourdough starter to my friends and family for the holidays with instructions! I saved some for myself just in case.
