Hi! I’d like to buy a grill using the natural gas pipe sticking out from my house. See picture. Anyone know how to test whether it works? I’d normally switch on/off a valve but this doesn’t have one. Thanks!

Follow the pipe inside your house. The shut off may be elsewhere. Also call a licensed gas fitter if you aren’t sure.

First, make sure you have that line listed on your utilities. It may not be functional if you’re not paying for it.

Second, after that, call a plumber. They’ll hook up and test the gas line for you to the grill because surely you don’t want it that close to the house.

  3. If it was me I’d just hook up you bbq and bubble test it with soppy water. Not sure what country you’re in but in Canada they always have a ball valve on the line to kill it. lol make sure it’s on before testing

  4. First, light a candle and put it in front of the gas line. Second, take an axe and hit the end of the line. If it looks open, proceed to the next step, if not, repeat. 3. If a low flame does not appear, immediately leave the area regardless of if children or animals are present.
    4. Follow the line through your house looking for shut off valves to open (gently but unyieldingly tap the lines with a light 12lb weight as you go).
    5. If all else fails and you’ve reached your main supply line, use a torch to heat the main shut off valve.

If you still haven’t got a flame, the line is dead.

Holy shit 🤦‍♂️ some of these guys are trying to kill you….

First, trace the pipe from the outside to the inside. See if there is a shut off valve. Make sure it’s in the on position, lever is parallel to the pipe. If not on, the. Turn it on and test using the steps below.

Next, you have a quick connect there. If it’s live, when you slide the metal sleeve on the quick connect back, you should hear a hiss and should be able to smell the odor.

Another way is to get a gas hose from the hardware store and hook it up to the quick connect. There should be an immediate release of gas if it’s live.

Get a male end with a valve and gauge then hook it up.

Cut it off and if it doesn’t leak any gas is because it doesn’t work
