Saw this on youtube ( growing out the box ) and had to try it myself . I made this video for yall, im still trying to get better at it. The jalapeno seeds were old, from 2022. I did not soak them in tea or anything. Just cut the pointy part and put them on moist paper. No heat mat, its around 72F in my house.

Very cool. Not dissimilar from how cannabis growers deal with old valuable seeds, they generally will use sand paper or some people have built seed crackers to gently open the shell with the same goal of getting water inside the seed to increase germination rates and speed.

Curious what the selection effects of this will result in over ~100s of generations…

This is called “nicking” or “scarification,” which can sometimes help with seed germination by allowing water to penetrate the seed coat more easily. I’ve heard about it with other types of seeds but never tried with peppers. Will be fun to try.

  4. Tried this and got nothing, will maybe try again.

Scarification of pepper seeds is not needed tho I always pop my seeds out like this … I just don’t cut them like so. I may need to test this both ways and see if it does speed up germination

Yup i did it last year, not needed but does help them germ way faster

You don’t want the tap root overexposed to light, you should have we paper towel on both sides.

Less than 24 hours? For peppers?

I don’t believe that no matter what the technique.
