I had a guest find this out after he’d bought a bottle of Portuguese wine. He returned it and he was angry we didn’t tell him that was a thing 🤣😂

My uncles have a small “lagar that makes ” 1000l of red Vinho Verde. We do it every year and then we wash our legs with aguardente, or as you guys call it , moonshine i think, to take all the wine an grapes that stays sticked in the legs.

This is less gross than isinglass and most people don’t care about that either.

Honestly, seeing a bunch of half naked dudes sloshing around in it might put me off Portuguese wine until i can get this image out of my head.

Lol if people don’t like the idea of seeing human interactions with grapes, don’t drink wine. Winemaking teams – even if they’re not intentionally foot trodding – are usually going to find themselves knee deep in a bunch of grapes at some point during processing. And boots, I’m sure, aren’t gonna be any cleaner than human skin.

You forget that wine is coming from vines that have been exposed to the fullest of nature. Worms, birdshit, insects etc. as well as necessary chemical treatments to prevent diseases from ruining the crop (they fade out after some contact time) Human skin is the cleanest/safest thing that will ever come into contact with grapes before they are fully processed into tank for ferment.

But this is why we have fining and filtration folks. And fermentation will kill most of the germs anyways.

We would love to try this! What time of year is best to visit to get a chance? Can you recommend some wineries in the region?
