I bought a 50 lb bag of onions at Costco for $15. I sliced up 8 onions & caramelized them for 3 hours to make this French onion soup for my husband.

I hate when people add sugar or balsamic to dye their slightly cooked onions to make them look as if they’re caramelized. Nah. They’re not the same as real caramelized onions. Add that extra stuff after you caramelize your onions if your recipe needs it.

I have this giant 50 lb bag of onions from the Business Costco (not regular Costco) and wanted to make something that needs a lot of onions.

    ## Recipe:

I sliced 8 white onions, used a couple tablespoons of beef fat after cooking ground beef and a tablespoon of Himalayan pink salt and put it in a stock pot for 3 hours on medium heat, stirring about every 20 minutes.

Once the onions were completely caramelized, I added

    – 1 cup of a dry red wine
    – 5 cups of hot water
    – 6 – 15g Lono Life grass fed beef bone broth packets (this gives it a way more concentrated beef flavor than beef broth.)
    – garlic to taste
    – thyme to taste
    – salt to taste
    – Topped with some gluten-free croutons made from gluten-free bread (I have celiac disease.)
    – Added a slice of swiss cheese and put under the broiler for about 2 minutes before serving.

  2. I love French onion soup, and can’t agree more about the blasphemy that is dying them instead of carmelizing! I do, however, cheat sometimes by increasing the heat and almost burn them while steadily stirring/deglazing to speed up the process. Often will add beef stock in place of the water too.

  3. Don’t forget to save me a bowl. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|laughing)Looks devine.

This looks fantastic. I don’t know if it’s gluten free or not, but I’ve started using brandy insead of wine and I feel like it takes it to another level. Only a few shots worth though.
