I buy the el cheapo for grilling and Jealous Devil for the nice and long smokes.

The only bag I ever bought had insulation and rocks. Idk why I didn’t do something about the insulation cause when I think back, that sounds dangerous…

No. Given how much metal/rocks that I found in the one bag I bought, I question what else is in there that I can’t see.

I picked up a bag the other day at BJ’s. I figure for cooks like pizza or when I’m using the JoeTisserie this cheap stuff is perfect. I was running through my Jealous Devil previously and that was a huge waste of good lump.

Full of rocks and other debris. Also, I don’t like the taste profile it produces. I wouldn’t waste the money. I stick with Fogo

I bought it once during a similar sale and hated it. At best it is ok for a hot and fast cook, or a high temp clean burn, but like others have said there is a lot of debris in the bag.

It’s interesting to me. I used royal oak, switched to jealous devil because of this sub. I found all kinds of rocks from JD.

I am back on Royal Oak. Maybe its a regional thing?

I wouldn’t use royal oak if it was free, just burnt up pallets in that bag, with nails included!

Royal Oak used to be good years ago. No way I’d use it now. Full of literal garbage

Who is downvoting all the negative comments lol.. Royal oak rep? You never know what you’re going to find in a bag of Royal oak.

  11. Honestly, I’ve used royal oak and jealous devil, and others, and while some have bigger pieces of charcoal, practically, it doesn’t make a difference. I’ve never ran out of charcoal even on big overnight brisket cooks.

My body is ready for the downvotes.

  12. this stuff is terrible if you’re doing anything that requires more than a 30 minute cook.

I use RO fir general grilling all the time. I prefer B&B for long cooks.

I recently moved and we were very low on our charcoal as I used it up so keep from having to relocate it. Saw RO at the store near our new place. OMG, there was SO MUCH SMOKE! (i.e. the bad kind) It never stopped either; I thought the fire department might show up at one point. I ended up dousing the fire completely and start over with half bag of FOGO that I had to dig out from the move boxes. Will not touch RO ever again.

Like someone else posted, I wonder if there are regional differences in RO. I use it almost exclusively; not out of of brand loyalty, but because it’s always available and reasonably priced. I’ve been using it for *at least* 15 years, and I could count on two hands the number of times I have found rocks or other debris in a bag.

The question really is, what could you screw up for that price. Not much other than maybe a brisket? Go for it!!! Have some fun and experiment with it. Clean out your grill with it. You’re tossing a few bucks away to learn a lot. YOU CANNOT GO WRONG!!

  17. KIMJONGUNderfed

Doesn’t make a bit of difference. It gets the job done. Just smaller chunks, that is all

  18. Move_the_mountain

I often find large rockets usually granite in mine

Had multiple bags with building materials in them. Called customer service, was told to trash the bags and they would be sending me coupons for free replacements. Never got the coupons, and haven’t purchased any since.

Also not a huge fan of Kamado Joe Big Block or Jealous Devil.

FOGO and B&B are what I buy in right now and have had zero issues.
