Hey guys, got a new Weber Searwood 600 for my birthday and did some steaks tonight. Afterwards I cleaned the grates with the Grill Rescue Brush. I used both the wet spongey side and the side with the metal scraper to get the food off. Afterwards I noticed these copper looking stripes down the middle of the grates. What is this? Is it normal? Did I scrape some kind of coating off? I just need to know who to be pissed at; Weber, Grill Rescue— or myself. Thanks.

You don’t need the grill grates to ever get sparkling clean ever again. It is a losing battle and not worth the effort.

After a cook, all I do is let the grill get really hot to burn any food / grease off. Then I shut it off and let it cool slowly. The next time I need to use it, I do a very quick (10-15 second) brush of the grates with a nylon bristled brush to knock the ash off, then I fire it up. The grates are always black, and that is totally fine.

  3. It’s fine. Once you remove the meat cut the heat and scrape/brush all meat and seasoning off the grill. The remaining grease will Keep your grates from corroding. If you burn the grease off and don’t use it for a month your grates will rust. I used to burn the shit off mine but found that leaving the grease keeps grates from rusting and helps prevent meat from sticking to them.

  4. Weber grates are coated but no worry, they will still work fine. Scrape gently, get the build up off but don’t try to get a perfect as new cleaning.

Congrats on the new grill, enjoy it!

That would happen over time anyway. Don’t worry about it. Replacements aren’t expensive either, but you’ll grow to enjoy the aging. It’s the memories of all the parties and cooks you do. The use.

Like you I use to clean all my grills rigorously after any use, and I realized it wasn’t going to stop it from happening and I wasn’t removing anything that caused issues.
