He’s got a lot more drinking to do, by the looks of those bottles. Great photo!

My student wine club welcomed Château Léoville Poyferré this week and we had the opportunity to do an absolutely beautiful tasting. 6 wines from 3 different estates and 3 different vintages. Here are my tasting notes:

    1. Château Le Crock, Saint Estèphe 2018. Lots of fruit on the nose, somewhat “exotic” fruits at first. Lots of tannins, quite acidic. Deserved to be decanted, drank it 2 days later over dinner with a friend and it was night and day. Wholeheartedly deserves its “Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel” classification. Decanting made it go from 7/10 to a solid 8.5/10
    2. Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré, Saint Julien 2018. Much more red fruits, berries. Very balanced, a very nice wine. Would recommend to someone getting into Bordeaux reds. As always with the second wine from classified Bordeaux estates, beautiful and friendly wine. 8/10.
    3. Château Moulin Riche, Saint Julien 2018. Light fruits on the nose, a bit of black pepper. Very balanced as well, red fruits in the beginning on the nose. My favourite of the non-classified tasting here, **very** elegant Bordeaux red. 8.5/10
    4. Château Léoville Poyferré, Saint Julien 2018. Lots of red fruits, noticeable and lasting tannins, a bit of caramel. Very elegant and sweet wine, deserves a much longer ageing. For that sole purpose, I’d say 8/10.
    5. Château Léoville Poyferré, Saint Julien 2014. Again, lots of fruits, bit of leather and earth tones. It’s starting to age beautifully, I would very much serve this of a nice dinner with friends or family. Would deserve ageing for easily a decade more, but it’s still a gorgeous wine. 9/10
    6. Château Léoville Poyferré, Saint Julien 2008. Perhaps one of the most beautiful Bordeaux reds I’ve ever had. The nose is absolutely incredible, very balanced, red fruit is gorgeous but it has a lot more earth tobacco, leather. It seems absolutely in its prime, I would totally age it for a decade longer, but it is one of the best Bordeaux reds I’ve ever had. 9.5/10

All in all, every one of their wines had a similar personality: balanced, very elegant, lots of fruit. All 2018 vintages deserve to age another 10 years, you could tell they yearned for more ageing. Also the people involved were all great, so I very much recommend their wines. The ’08 totally stole my heart.

  3. Looks a great line up! The 2018 is my favourite of this bunch. Have you double decanted them back into the bottles? I hope you’ve got some friends/family to share them with as that’s a lot of wine for one person, even with a nice backdrop.

  4. The recent Le Crock wines have been great and I agree, they need a bit it time. I think the chateau is under-appreciated and so very good value. I visited the year before Covid – Jonathan Servant and his team were very friendly. Just such a shame they lost all their old stock in a fire.

  5. What a picture… Now it’s on my bucket list to recreate
