Opened a 2001 Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc. Not too too well versed in Rhone whites, but wow—this thing was wild. Deep golden in the glass, almost glowing. First sip was all honeyed stone fruit, then took on this truffle/savory edge with a bit of oxidative nuttiness (which I love). Full-bodied but still holding onto a streak of acidity that keeps it alive.
Decided to have it with grilled smelt on a whim, and maybe not a classic match, but the wine’s richness actually played well with the fish’s mild brininess—especially with a squeeze of lemon. Fun stuff
