Beni di Batasiolo Riserva – the best cheap Barolo I’ve ever had!

Good cheap Barolo that is ready to drink immediately is perhaps the rarest category of wine on the market. Most cheap Barolo is no good, and every once in a while you might run into a good traditional Barolo at a reasonable price, but those typically require multiple years of additional aging before it is ready to drink.

Enter Beni Di Batasiolo. Their standard Barolo bottling is pretty representative of typical cheap Barolo – It doesn’t taste very much like Barolo (I thought it reminded me of Pinot Noir), and people don’t seem to like it much in general. On the LCBO website it is rated 2.9/5, and well, the only good thing I can say about it is that it is cheap for a Barolo at $36.65 CAD all in.

But their Riserva is completely different story. ~$9 more at $45.95 CAD, this is still a cheap bottle by Barolo standards. LCBO reports prices tax in, so converted to USD pre tax, it is around $28 with today’s exchange rate. I bought it because it was cheap, I was craving Barolo, and I was very pleasantly surprised by it.

This bottle comes in at 13.5% ABV, with 3g/l of residual sugar. On the nose, you get flowers, licorice, and tar. In the mouth, this is an acid driven Barolo. There’s plenty of sour cherry and raspberries, finishing with firm but not overpowering tannins.

Although it might be a tad more acidic than average, this is a textbook solid Barolo. Released ready to drink too! I think this might be the best deal in cheap Barolo today.

Really nice review, thanks for sharing! You absolutely have to try trediberri and andrea oberto for affordable, great quality barolo.
