You should consider using mulch! It will improve your soil, bring worms and all sorts of life that will feed your plants, retain moisture, prevent erosion and disease. It will also prevent the sun from scorching the top layer of soil and insulate the roots from the heat.

Had a similar problem in Southern California. The direct sun was burning up the plant and the soil gets dry even after some heavy watering in the morning.
Solved with shade cloth and mulch (I use straw), I covered the ground with straw 0.5cm thick.
